CHAPTER EIGHT

THAT NIGHT, FOLLOWING an exhausting, frenetic afternoon getting all the final prep done in her department for the upcoming storm and bolstering outreach to the community to make sure everyone was prepared for the hurricane making landfall on the Keys later that night, Stacy and her crew were helping the Key West General maintenance guys get the final storm shutters in place over the windows in the ER waiting area.

The wind had picked up significantly since that morning, with the storm’s rapid approach, and even the enormous palm trees lining the parking lot outside were starting to bend like drinking straws. Her nerves were thrumming with purpose and a pointed need to get down to the basement where Miguel was staying with one of the nurses until Stacy finished up here.

Luckily, under Luis’s excellent guidance, the hospital had been well prepared and it was only a matter of kicking their evacuation plans into high gear today. They had released as many patients as they could safely to hunker down at home, and the more critically ill or not-yet-ready-for-release patients had been moved to an emergency triage unit set up in the basement cafeteria, which had been cleared and prepped as a small hospital in itself, with the corridors and other rooms down there acting as overflow space.

A loud crash sounded against the wall outside, jarring her from her thoughts as they fit the last metal storm shutter into place over the windows. It was a public trash can, the heavy kind made of cement with a steel liner. The last huge gust had picked it up and rolled it into the building like it was nothing more than an empty soda can.

“There goes the Luigi’s awning,” one of the other firefighters said, pointing across the street toward a local Italian restaurant. Sure enough, the huge red-and-white-striped expanse of fabric billowed through the air like a huge kite before disappearing around the corner.

Right. If that wasn’t a signal to get downstairs, Stacy didn’t know what was. Pulse racing, she wiped her hands on the legs of her uniform pants then hiked her thumb toward the stairwell door. “Basement. Now. I’m going to make one more sweep up here then I’ll join you.”

“Want me to go with you, Captain?” Jeffrey, one of the youngest members of her crew, asked.

“No. I got it. Pretty sure everyone’s downstairs now. This is just a precaution.” She watched them all leave then headed through the automatic doors into the trauma bay area. She’d never seen it so eerily quiet. Even in here, you could still hear the low howl of the wind outside, like an approaching banshee. The lights flickered then came back on. The hospital had generators, thank goodness, so no worries about losing power tonight. As she walked around the circular layout of the department, checking for any stragglers, she came across one last charge nurse, filling up a supply bag with syringe packs, bandages, gauze and other necessities, in case reinforcements were needed downstairs.
